I’ve compiled my specifications, as this is typical when seeking solutions for similar problems.
CPU - i9-9900KF
GPU - EVGA RTX 2080 Super
RAM - Corsair dominator 2 x 16GB
Mobo - Asus Prime Z390-A
2 SSD: i) Samsung 970 EVO 1TB ii) Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB
I’ve searched extensively, but the fixes found for others didn’t work for me. I’m reaching out for advice, as it would be greatly appreciated.
Issue: For background, briefly: I attempted to enable secure boot on my Gigabyte Z390 Elite after using the other mobile, but the computer wouldn’t boot and the VGA red light stayed on. I tried replacing RAM one at a time, resetting the GPU and CMOS (jumper and battery removal), but nothing resolved the problem. The computer still wouldn’t start. I submitted an RMA with my GPU vendor, received a replacement GPU, and used it, but the issue persisted. I also tried fresh PCIe cables and external tools, yet the problem continued.
Recently, I reinstalled my old motherboard (Asus Prime Z390-A) and everything functioned properly. However, about 20-30 minutes later, the system froze and displayed a BSOD with “kernel in page error.” This was the reason I chose the Gigabyte board initially, since I experienced frequent BSODs with my Asus Prime. After wiping the C drive and reinstalling Windows under “keep previous files,” the issue disappeared, though I still swapped motherboards to prevent future problems.
Currently, my old board is still operational for short periods, but I’m seeking guidance on whether the problem lies with the SSD or another component.
Options under consideration:
- Attempt to wipe the SSD and reinstall Windows 10 on the C drive, or
- Wait for the new board to arrive and perform a swap again.
I believe the first option would be simpler.
PSU details: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)? History of heavy use for gaming, video editing, or bit mining? Did it get used for both motherboards?
PSU: Corsair RM850x, 850 watt, 3 years old, original build, brand new
Ideal for heavy gaming, no video editing or mining
Perfect for both mobos
PSU is a probable cause.
Several actions can be considered.
For simplicity, check the Reliability History/Monitor. Search for errors, warning codes, and any events around the BSODs and other problems.

Do you have another 850 watt PSU to test?
Make sure to use only the cables that came with the replacement PSU.
no, i don't have another PSU for testing, so i'd need to purchase another one. it's surprising that it was functioning perfectly for three months with the new motherboard, but the computer only started acting up after enabling secure boot in the BIOS. i believe it could be a software problem or an issue with the motherboard. the ram, cpu, and gpu have all been replaced in the past year.
