Usually I’d use two 8GB drives in dual channel on slots 2 and 4, but slot 4 isn’t working now. Should I opt for a single 16GB drive in slot 2, or combine options like 1x8GB in slot 1 with 2x8GB in slots 1 and 2, or 1 and 3?

There might be issues with stability at positions 1 and 3, though this option offers the top performance.

Checked if I made any changes to slot 4. A CPU reinsertion might help, or using compressed air could clear any debris.

slot 4 shows physical damage, so I can only insert RAM into the first three slots.

Usually, using dual channels (slots 1 and 3) provides a minor performance improvement compared to single channel (1 stick or multiple sticks in slots 2 and 3). You can enable flex mode when you have all three RAM sticks and only require total capacity, though compatibility may become tricky.
