I've been looking into components for a project built on Windows 8.1 and wondering if anyone has tried running Broadwell-E there or on Windows 7. The Intel Product Compatibility Tool isn't helpful because it ignores certain non-mobile CPUs like the 68xx/69xx series. Microsoft intentionally stopped updates for Kaby Lake and newer chips on systems with 8.1 and 7, and they almost cut support for Sky Lake in 2017 before reversing. Even though Broadwell-E is technically a newer generation than Sky Lake, I'm doubtful it will be supported, especially with a 6xxx series model. I’d go with a 5960x but would prefer the performance boost from a 6900k or 6950x.
