I've been checking out new PCs for competitive Apex Legends lately. Right now I'm using an i7 8700 (non-K) and a 1070, and I thought upgrading to something like a 9900K plus a 2080Ti would be enough for smooth 1080p at 240Hz. But we all know that's pushing it too far, even with overclocking on the 5.0 platform. What are my choices? 1. Get a 9900K paired with a high-end board, 2080Ti, plus some fast RAM (4000MHz+) and 32/64GB, and try to squeeze in as much performance as possible. 2. Same idea, but swap the 9900K for a 9900K instead. 3. Pick up a 2080Ti or 2080Super now, and hold off until the 10900K comes out—probably not worth it right now, since it's still around 14nm and Intel only adds cores. 4. Stick with my old rig: sell the 1070, upgrade to a 2070 Super, and wait for Intel’s 10900K and NVIDIA’s 30xx GPUs. That way I can get top-tier gear if 10900K arrives, and it’ll be cheaper than jumping on the next big thing. My budget is flexible as long as I can hit stable 240fps without weird setups like dual CPUs or two 2080Ts.

8700 plus 2080ti results in 222fps at high settings. At 9900k+2080ti, 229fps is achieved on high settings. According to the comparison, on medium both will reach over 240fps.

I don't believe upgrading from 8700 to 9900k is worthwhile. It's only about 10% more performance for around 500€.

Didn't find anyone sharing the same experience with high-performance stable settings. The 240+ on low 1080 with custom configurations really stands out, especially with the new "World's Edge" map that boosts everything. It’s frustrating when dips are tough, especially with many teams in the fourth circle. Thanks for your thoughts—I was considering a 9900k with 32GB for daily use, since CPU performance matters more than GPU alone. I doubt HT will help much, but it could ease some workloads. Buying an older 2070/2080Ti might be a smarter short-term choice before investing in a higher-end model later.

This setup pairs well with your existing i7 8700 and offers better performance than the i9 9900K, delivering competitive FPS and impressive visuals for other activities. The i9 9900K provides minimal advantage in this scenario. At 240hz, the difference is negligible—around 2ms—making it mostly a marketing gimmick unless you're a professional gamer.

Many people mentioned it, but the 240hz "placebo" doesn't really appeal to me. I moved from a high-end Predator model to a top-tier 240hz monitor XN253QX, which currently has the second fastest input lag on the market. Whether I'm semi-pro or pro depends on how you view it. It's interesting that EA still supports 20 tickrate servers, yet I still perform better aiming and focusing on a 240hz display even when reducing resolution to 4:3 for 200fps+. Even though I can invest in durable gear, I'm hesitant to spend 1300-1500€ on a GPU that might lose value quickly as Nvidia moves toward the 30xx series.
