Bottleneck in HP 255 G7 RAM upgrades
Hi everyone, my friend uses an HP 255 G7 with many open tabs. I thought upgrading his RAM to 8GB would help. I looked at the maintenance and service guide from HP (page 1 and 2) and it mentions a maximum of 8GB. Then I checked the CPU, which is a Ryzen 3 2200U, and it seems it supports up to 32GB. It’s possible the manual is outdated or there might be other limitations not listed.
The motherboard may restrict RAM capacity, but in practice it rarely does. Most OEM systems and laptops I've used to expand beyond the supported limit perform well. However, going beyond that isn't assured, so results vary. Have you seen any community feedback about similar upgrades on this particular machine?
I didn't find any other reports you didn't even attempt. I was mainly curious about the chances that something else could prevent further growth, so I'm looking into my own device. I'll probably try one of my RAM sticks just to see if it registers, and if it does, I'll get another one for him.
In numerous situations OEMs establish maximum memory limits based on their intended factory offerings, rather than actual capabilities. Even if a processor can handle 32GB, success depends on verification through testing.
