Could this game still work as a co-op experience? I used to play it with a friend about half a year ago, but we never completed it. Recently I asked him if he’s interested in finishing it, and he mentioned there’s no longer any co-op support available.

I've been enjoying multiplayer games for about three months... Steam is the platform, right?

I tried it today and COOP remains fully functional. EU Steam.

You recently tried the co-op version of both Borderlands 1 and 2, and everything functioned well.

Your friend likely mentioned the temporary absence of multiplayer features in Borderlands 1 following Gamespy's closure. Gamespy had hosted the cooperative aspects of the game. Borderlands 1 now utilizes Steamworks for its multiplayer functionality. All Borderlands titles currently depend on Steamworks for their co-op servers, and there are no announced intentions to discontinue those services.
