Boards that come with built-in compatibility for 3rd generation Ryzen processors
Search for affordable motherboards under $100 compatible with 3rd Gen Ryzen, excluding MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX.
Currently, most AM4 boards should work together. Compatible boards usually display a "Ryzen 3000 ready" label. Based on my observations, this is likely the case now. If not, other MSI MAX boards, X570 (maybe too expensive) and Asus B450-F are also compatible options.
The ASUS ROG Strix B450-F is costly and ranks poorly among B450 boards, easily surpassed by cheaper alternatives like the Tomahawk. It’s advisable to avoid discussing it further. Even adjusting voltages didn’t match the performance of the Tomahawk—on the R9 3950X, the VRM reached 112°C while the Tomahawk stayed at 87°C. This extra heat led to throttling in the 3950X, resulting in slower completion times (1951 seconds vs. 1819 on the Tomahawk) for the Blender benchmark. A disappointing outcome for what was the most expensive B450 model at launch.
