If OP verifies, the device probably retains OSX, allowing its use in alternative scenarios when Windows 8 isn't available. The individual might have preferred Windows 8 for specific software that performs better there. While some might doubt spending a lot on gaming gear, they prioritize their needs.
It's worth mentioning that OS X comes with many languages built-in, allowing you to execute scripts found online. However, that doesn't reflect the typical business environment. Most companies avoid using OS X because their applications aren't compatible. Startups are more likely to adopt it, though. Google seems to favor Macs since employees select their hardware, and in Silicon Valley very few startups run Windows. Costs are higher, and it's not currently popular.
