Blackscreen combined with intense fanspin
Blackscreen combined with intense fanspin
Hello everyone,
I'm experiencing an issue where my PC displays a black screen with the GPU fans running at full speed. Despite having sound and being able to chat via Discord, nothing else works. After restarting, it returns to normal. This problem occurs frequently during game startup, especially with titles like R6 using DirectX, which causes the black screen, whereas R6 with Vulcan runs without issues. I also notice microstutters in games that can be resolved by lowering settings or limiting frames. The issue seems to worsen over time.
Here are my system details:
- CPU: Intel i5-10400F
- GPU: MSI Radeon RX 480 GAMING X 8G
- RAM: 2x G.Skill Aegis 8GB 3000mHz (X.M.P enabled)
- PSU: ThermalTake "Hamburg" 530W
- Motherboard: GIGABYTE B560M DS3H V2
- SSD: Crucial P3 Plus 500GB M.2
- OS: Windows 11 Pro
I've checked the graphics drivers extensively, suspecting crashes, and tried multiple versions and a fresh install. CPU, RAM, SSD, and motherboard are new and installed with the latest Windows 11 version. CMOS was cleared.
Thermal readings for both CPU and GPU appear normal, with the GPU rarely reaching over 70°C and the CPU around 50°C. The hardware seems intact—no visible damage on connectors, and I haven't disassembled the GPU since purchasing it in 2017, so thermal paste hasn't been changed. I've only cleaned dust occasionally, but the thermal sheets look fine.
I'm unsure about the cause and would greatly appreciate any advice or help you can provide.
It was actually quite straightforward. I applied fresh thermal compound to the die and it performs excellently now. It shouldn’t be surprising given the 6 years of using the factory paste, though the temperatures were manageable so I didn’t switch before. Since I didn’t have any thermal pads, I kept the old ones. I’ll probably purchase a new GPU soon. Thanks for your time, thestryker!
