Black screen on Asus k53s, what should I do?
So my friend received a laptop with a black screen and mentioned that one day when he turned it on the display went dark. He asked me to repair it, but after trying everything—plugging it into a monitor, swapping RAM and hard drive—it still didn’t work. Now I’m here seeking advice on how to fix it.
I’ve tested all possible solutions, but nothing helped. The weirdest part was that when the laptop was on, I couldn’t turn it off by pressing the power button; the lights didn’t switch off either. I used to be able to shut it down that way, but now I can’t. There’s also no sound of the fan or spinning CD/DVD drive, and when I connect a mouse or keyboard, no lights appear.
I think the issue might be with the CPU or CMOS battery. Any idea what to do next?
If the battery fails, it doesn't result in a black screen. Connecting it to an external monitor could offer a solution, using the Fn key on the keyboard to switch displays or extend usage. Absence of fan noise may indicate an issue with the CPU or motherboard, as you noted.
I believe the GPU on the motherboard or the board itself might be the issue. Are you certain the RAM was replaced with reliable, compatible units? It would help to test with a 2GB DDR3-1333MHz stick to see if the laptop starts functioning. Additionally, I suspect the power input and circuitry could be damaged since the laptop lacks its battery and was used with the power brick.
I attempted to use the fn key to extend the monitor, but it didn't function.
I'm confident I swapped in the working RAM modules. I'll consider using the CMOS battery next. However, I was wondering if a complete GPU failure would cause it to switch to the IGPU?
