Black screen, GPU fans at maximum, WDM.exe issues with kernelbase.dll in Event Viewer
Hey! I'm experiencing a black screen problem while gaming, especially when the GPU fans are running at maximum speed. The issue appears unexpectedly and keeps happening unless I restart the computer. Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this? My system specs are: Ryzen 7 3800X (stock, not overclocked), Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super OC edition with 2x8GB RAM at 3200MHz, ASUS Prime B550M-K (latest BIOS), Seasonic SSR-500GB3, Windows 10 22H2 (80+ bronze), temperatures are around 54°C idle, spiking to 87°C during load before crashing, and 45°C idle peaking at 84°C after a restart).
I've tried several fixes: reinstalling Windows, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers via DDU, running a clean NVIDIA update, cleaning everything, even replacing the thermal paste after finding it dried up. I also disassembled the GPU, cleaned it, and noticed the original paste had cracked and needed fresh application. There was a stuck thermal pad on the heatsink, but I couldn't replace it because I don’t have any spare parts.
I tested the GPU on another PC, but the problem still occurs. I’m playing games like Dota 2, Skyrim, RDR2, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Valorant, PUBG, and Borderlands. The GPU is over two years old and mainly used for gaming, streaming, and browsing.
I’m from the Philippines, lost my receipt, and it looks like I’m past warranty. Do you think there’s any chance I could return it or get it repaired at Gigabyte?
