I previously tried the mod and wanted to know if buying it makes sense. The main distinction lies in updates—early access is the sole version receiving new content, while the free version offers a different experience. Yes, the paid update is specifically for those who want the latest features.

The Steam version of Black Mesa features numerous enhancements, improvements, and fresh functionalities since its mod release. The single-player experience is now significantly refined compared to the original mod release; it includes new graphics, updated voiceovers, refreshed gameplay scenarios, stability adjustments, and additional features. Xen remains separate from the Steam release but will be added as a free update once available. Multiplayer options in Black Mesa Multiplayer let you battle or cooperate with friends across six classic maps from the Half-Life Deathmatch series: Bounce, Gasworks, Lambdabunker, Stalkyard, Subtransit, and Undertow. Developers’ custom modding tools are preserved, allowing you to build your own mods, modes, and maps for both Black Mesa and Multiplayer. The fully integrated Workshop lets you create and share your projects seamlessly. Complete Steam integration unlocks collectibles such as trading cards, backgrounds, emoticons, and more, delivering a complete Steam game environment.

originally a solo addition to ModDB, likely the version you're thinking of—free, though I don't have the full thread details.

Black Mesa functions as an amalgamation of the original Half-Life titles rather than a single unified collection.
