I'm not sure about the situation, but it's definitely unusual. I've noticed tearing on my 144 Hz screen at the same moments I did with my 60 Hz displays in the past: when the frame rate goes beyond the refresh limit. In those rare cases, I just limit it somehow. I usually play games at 60 to 144 Hz, and I haven't seen tearing at those speeds before.

From personal experience using 144hz, never had an issue with screen tearing, I never did on 60hz either, but when I play a game that is not needing super fast reflexes, I V-sync. The entire thing is subjective and subject to hardware performance too which is why I made a poll. Those people obsessing fit into two areas mostly, hardware too under-powered for even low settings or too much power and needing to justify the money they spent.

These features apply only to specific FPS settings. If you can maintain V-sync without interruptions, it may not be essential. Also, not all monitors offer these capabilities, which makes the point less relevant for some users.

You might not be familiar with V-Sync and its differences from G-Sync, FreeSync, and Fast Sync. It's possible to use V-Sync even with a CRT monitor.

I responded according to the monitor's refresh rate. It looks like you believe you understand everything, especially about targeting lower FPS players.

I had a strong interest in tracking the FPS and paying attention to my scores during gameplay. That was when I first moved to PC last year. At one point, I prioritized the FPS display in the corner over actual gameplay. I’ve since stopped focusing on that. Now I just play, and unless there are obvious frame drops, I don’t dwell on it. It remains important—still the reason I left console gaming after over 30 years. But it wasn’t the problem eight months ago.
