Encryption generally affects speed, but I lack details since I don’t use it. BitLocker isn’t ideal for me because it’s proprietary.

Encryption can be handled by hardware, but usually it adds performance costs you wouldn’t want. I wouldn’t even think about it on my gaming rig—every millisecond matters. Instead, I’d opt for a simple notebook and pick an open-source tool to keep what I need private. Honestly, it’s not worth cluttering my rig with extra processes. I’m using a T495 with Ubuntu One and LUKS.

Open Source refers to software that either includes its source code publicly or allows anyone to view and improve it. It’s typically released under a free license, enabling contributions from the community.

I didn't notice any effect. I verified it on my drives before turning it on, and the performance remained as expected on all of them. The work was completed using hardware.

If your chip includes an integrated hardware accelerator, it will function accordingly, while devices from the pre-bitlocker era typically lack this feature.

The 2011 machine didn't have any issues, though external TPM modules for JTPM header are available (hopefully I missed that sooner). Still, encrypted data needs to move to the TPM and back, which seems like extra work.
