an Intel Core i5-4670K with 8GB RAM, DDR3 memory at 1600MHz, an ADATA XPG DDR3 drive, a Z690 550W PSU (tested with a 500W EVGA unit too). The BIOS was set to F8 initially and changed to F7 before the issue started.

Have you experimented with a different power source? It might also be that the voltage levels are falling below requirements, causing the system to stop.

Ya that would be my first try. Not so much that its undersized but more that its failing or has an issue of some kind. Barring that it could be the VRMs on the board or a thousand other things. Like a bad trace or a shorted trace or a bad CPU or bad ram or yadda yadda. I'd just try replacing each of the components one at a time to see what fixes it... replacing the board though is most likely the solution.

Verified the CMOS battery level. If it falls below 2.9 volts, it might lead to unexpected behavior. Considering its age (four years or more), replacing it could be wise for peace of mind. Clearing the CMOS seems like a likely reason for the issue.

I also gave it a shot, but didn't succeed.
