Hey there! I’m facing a pretty frustrating problem: converting an old PC into a TrueNAS server, but it keeps failing to boot because the BIOS says “no VGA detected.” After some digging, I found this seems normal for consumer motherboards. I’m using an Asus Z87M Plus with an Intel Xeon E3-1230v3 CPU—bought it for about $50 to boost performance. My goal was to upgrade to a 4790k, but the seller changed the part, and now I’m stuck.

I have one GPU that I could install, but it’s the only one I own and I want to keep using it for my gaming PC/VM server (6700XT). In the long run, I need a way to disable the GPU requirement in BIOS. I’d really prefer not to waste money or time swapping CPUs or buying an older GPU just so the system boots. Unfortunately, in “System Configuration > Graphics Configuration” I can only choose “AUTO” or “PCIE,” and there’s no other option. The BIOS is already updated, but I could revert to the original settings if needed.

My current CPU—an older 2+ years model—might not be ideal for TrueNAS with plans to run Plex later. From what I understand, Plex/TrueNAS relies on CPU encoding, so a GPU shouldn’t be necessary. If there’s another solution, I’d appreciate it before returning the unit.

Thanks for reading! By the way, I’m also annoyed that this kind of limitation never came up despite all the tech content I’ve watched. In the long run, it won’t matter since I can always upgrade if nothing else works… but “the more you know.”

The CPU lacks built-in graphics support. You should consider a Xeon E3 model with part numbers ending in 5 or 6, a separate GPU, or a desktop processor that includes integrated graphics for your socket. "Full-size" server boards featuring IPMI typically have minimal onboard graphics (such as RAGE 128 or Matrox G200), but these are uncommon on desktops and workstations. Look for BIOS settings to enable POST recovery if errors occur, which may allow a headless boot. Otherwise, you'll need an alternative CPU or a dedicated GPU.

During the motherboard's initial setup, it verifies the presence of a video output to show on. Without a working display, the process fails. Fortunately, you can use any video card you have. Check local shops or ask around for used components that might fit. I often keep old ATI Radeon cards in storage for this kind of situation.

Thanks for the feedback. I was counting on something different... I think I'll bring back the old CPU and maybe send the new one instead. This is really frustrating.

yeah, it's kinda frustrating that there is no real concrete, discernible way of telling if a CPU has onboard graphics or not without just googling up the part number or looking at it's sales sheet. like, just add a "G" to the end if it does have IGFX or something... and do it for all CPU part numbers. consistency is key. i5-4690 has IGFX is pretty close to the Xeon E3-1230v3 performance wise. i think the Xeon benchmark is like 5 to 8% better performing depending if you got a (none) or k version and i think a 4690s performs the same and maybe a little better than the Xenon i would think you should be able to snag one of those i5's for about the same price as you got the Xenon these days if you are set in the performance aspect. i think truenas wants a dual core... it may not support more cores than 2...so... you might be able to get an even better dual core for the same price. something to look into anyways.
