Bios update required. PC is unresponsive.
Hey, I was just paying attention to someone about updating my old MSI gaming 5 Z97 motherboard BIOS. I checked MSI and saw only eight updates released up until 2016, so I thought I should have been keeping them all this time. After the update, everything seemed fine—lights turned on, fans ran normally—but nothing appears on my monitor. My USB mouse and keyboard don’t light up either. I tried connecting the monitor directly from the graphics card to HDMI on the board, but nothing worked. I removed the battery, waited a bit, then put it back in. Tried using a metal screwdriver and bridging two jumper pins; the blue LED lit up briefly. Still nothing. I unplugged the RAM and put it in one slot, but it’s just showing 00 on the display now, which jumps higher when the PC starts. Is this completely broken? Someone mentioned that removing the battery always resets the BIOS—did I miss something?
Only removing the battery restores the modifications made in that specific BIOS release, returning you to the earlier BIOS version you had.
It seems the motherboard is functioning properly after all your troubleshooting. Everything operates as expected.
Updated the BIOS via BIOS menu or directly from Windows. Disconnected the GPU and connected the monitor to the motherboard.
I already removed all components such as the Wi-Fi card, USB card, graphics card, and even the HDDs without Windows installed. I also cleared RAM and left one in place. I tried using HDMI on the motherboard, VGA and DVI connections. I installed the BIOS on a USB stick and used M-Flash in the BIOS menu during startup as recommended for these MSI gaming cards.
