Bios lists NVMe M.2 but Windows doesn't detect it.
I recently replaced my computer with fresh components, except for the graphics card and power supply unit. In my previous setup, I used a 970 EVO Plus 2TB M.2 drive. After swapping it into my new motherboard, everything functioned properly. However, when I inserted the new 990 EVO 1TB, it appeared in BIOS but not in Windows. It doesn’t show up in Device Manager, storage space lists, or system info. I searched online for solutions but found little guidance. Some fixes suggested issues with the BIOS or settings, yet nothing resolved the issue. I also tried a different M.2 slot, which didn’t help. I updated the storage controllers and checked them, but they were up to date. Another suggestion pointed out problems with my SSD and hard drive, advising me to unplug them before retrying—this attempt failed too. This is my first forum post about a tech issue, so please forgive any unclear details. I really need assistance to get my brand new M.2 PC running smoothly. Here are my specs: Motherboard: ASUS Z790 GAMING WIFI7 GPU: GeForce RTX 3070 8gb CPU: I9-12900k 12th Gen Memory: 2x32 CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 5200 Power Supply: EVGA 650 GQ 210-GQ-0650-V1 80+ GOLD 650W Modular Storage: SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 (Boot Drive, works fine) SAMSUNG 990 EVO SSD 1TB, PCIe Gen 4x4 | Gen 5x2 M.2 2280 (New drive, problematic) Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (old drive works fine) TOSHIBA Internal Hard Drive DT01ACA100 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache (old drive works fine) Operating System: Windows 11/10
Check Disk Management, find the drive there, and click initialize disk. It will be available afterward.
It wasn't showing up in disk management during the issue, so I kept searching for a solution. I tried using my BIO secure erase feature to wipe the data on the new drive. After that, I restarted the system and checked disk management again—data was there! That was a pretty odd fix, but I'm glad it worked. Thanks for your help!
