Your worry centers around safety while working inside a PC. Make sure the system is powered down and the power supply is off for best protection. If you're concerned about residual power, consider checking the motherboard's design—some components may store energy even after being disconnected from the PSU.

you don’t have an intel 12 gen, but a 13 gen won’t fit on a b660 without updating it via bios flashback. after that, you’ll need to power it up carefully. there’s a risk of damaging the board if there’s still some electrical residue from previous components like ram or other parts. to remove any remaining electricity, you can clean the solder joints and traces with a desoldering tool, then reassemble using proper techniques. avoid using any power during the process unless you’re certain it’s safe.

Which motherboard are you purchasing? From a physical shop or online?

It's not a major concern, I wouldn't stress too much about it. Hold the power button for 10 seconds if you're really focused, though that's not essential as long as the PSU is disconnected. You can also assemble the system completely and perform BIOS flashback afterward—it's completely safe to do so with the CPU, RAM, GPU, etc., already installed. Just note that installation isn't required for this process.

Could it work if I skip updating the BIOS and just install the CPU, or is a BIOS update required for it to function?

It's feasible if you obtain a board from a very recent production run, but this is highly improbable. If it functions, it's probably running a BIOS with limited 13th generation capabilities, making a BIOS upgrade advisable.

It seems you're asking if the Gigabyte B660 Gaming with DDR4 is a recent release. Let me clarify: the B660 was introduced in 2018, so it's not the latest model. If you're looking for newer options, there are updated variants available now.
