Hi, I'm trying to understand whether I can update my motherboard's BIOS myself without soldering or buying extra tools. I think it might be possible using the SPI pins already on the board and a Raspberry Pi. Someone on YouTube tried a similar approach but ran into issues with other parts and ended up desoldering the chip. The BIOS file is a CAP, while flashrom only works with binaries. My board is a ROG Strix B450-F Gaming, and I’m considering swapping it out for a cheaper one if this becomes too complicated. I’ve attached a photo of the chip and its SPI connections. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
You usually need to handle more than just the chip itself. If it's plugged into the motherboard, power will flow to other components too, often causing voltage drops that mess up communication attempts or letting another part accidentally reach the chip and disrupt things.
You just need to turn on the device and that activates the BIOS chip, allowing you to upload new firmware. Another way is to insert the motherboard drive, choose the recovery option, which will install the default settings. Make sure you have a 200MB flash memory ready for the update.
I haven't attempted a BIOS recovery. Check the manual for "3.11.3 ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3".

You need to reach the BIOS recovery display, but I’m unable to do so. The computer is fully unresponsive when using the CTRL+ALT+DEL shortcut. Here’s a summary of your system status: I began the BIOS update because the motherboard displayed a DRAM error boot LED during the initial boot attempt with my new 3000 series CPU. That light remains active, and the CPU fan isn’t running. Both RAM and the CPU have been verified to function correctly in another setup.
The disk runs its own BIOS, so the system will start from there. You actually boot directly from the disk, not the mainboard. This technique has been tried multiple times, but it only functions with a faulty flash drive paired with a functional board. I discovered this when I had a defective flash on an Asus M3A (the full part number). It was around 2008.
