It might be better to switch to an ATX or Micro ATX board. Your current setup isn’t fully compatible with your RX 6400 GPU, so upgrading would help. You’re mainly concerned about cooling and performance, not just cost. You already have a strong CPU upgrade path and can afford the change for better efficiency. For RAM, you’re fine keeping it the same and planning to upgrade later if needed.

We require additional details about the board you're using, its current CPU, the CPU you plan to use, and the specific boards you're considering. The size of the motherboard isn't crucial—some mATX options like the X670E Crosshair Gene are excellent AM5 boards, while others may not perform well. Without more information, it's impossible to provide a solid recommendation.

The specifics don't really affect the 6400 regardless of size, though the jump from Gen 4 to Gen 3 makes a big impact on the RX 6400. Check out the video by RandomGamingInHD for a clearer idea.

I checked out that video while purchasing my GPU, mainly because it showed RDR2 stats, and I was already aware my card wouldn’t be fully compatible. It didn’t really bother me much. I’m mostly wondering if there’s a difference in performance between ATX and Micro ATX under heavy loads, and how they manage heat distribution. I also bought the XFX model, though it might not be ideal (the fan is small), so compatibility isn’t a big concern for me.

Depends on features and how many expansion slots you need now or later. Also depends on you current and future case sizes May main rig has an ATX case. But that hardware will at some point move into living rooms in smaller cases. So it needs to be mATX. I also don't use dGPU. So mATX gives me all future expansion slots I probably never need. You see, this is very personal and really depends on YOUR needs. YMMV as they say.

Results wouldn't change at all if it's identical motherboard with matching power supply and voltage regulation.
