Beyond Potential Increased OCing, Water Cooling...
For enhanced performance, it's still air cooling, but using water as a medium helps remove heat faster from the CPU and spreads it more effectively through the radiator.
I wouldn't take the chance of harming my components by just a small overclock. My friend keeps his setup cool with water cooling from an ASRock motherboard, haha.
Nothing wrong with asrock and some of their products. Water cooling works much better in smaller cases OR when using two high-end GPUs in xfire or sli. I wouldn't say it's worth it on a normal mainstream PC with i5 and 390/980/970 etc. But it's a cool hobby and sometimes it comes down to what can be achieved.
I'm not claiming ASRocks are terrible, but they really struggle with OCing.
water cooling is my passion, I've been doing it for 20 years, and I wouldn't switch back to air cooling. it's not about the overclocking feature, though I enjoy it—I just do it for another reason. here are some links that might help: for me, it's about extending the lifespan of my system. I aim to keep it running for 6 to 10 years before needing an upgrade. With my last two units, I got around 8 years and 10 years respectively. I expect to see about 7 and 8 years from what I have now. I've been running them for four years already. One is for gaming, the other handles internet—both are in use now.
I run my systems at normal speeds since there’s nothing available that would require a clock adjustment. However, as the systems age and new programs are released for newer hardware, I’ll need to clock them to stay compatible with updated games. This approach lets me extend the life of older systems without upgrading to new parts.
My current project illustrates this well—I aim to boost my CPU to 3930K at 5Ghz and my GTX580 GPU to 930Mhz. At these settings, the system performs comparably to a stock 5930k CPU paired with two GTX980 GPUs in standard configuration.
It’s not ideal, but it works for me.
I also engage in it mainly as a hobby, though previously it also involved overclocking. I keep wateringcool because of its visual appeal, customization options, and the challenge it presents, like solving a puzzle.
