Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 are similar. I prefer Windows 8.1, but I also appreciate the appearance of Vista!

Install Windows 10 for the latest features and regular updates. It ensures smooth performance across all versions, from Windows 7 onward. All games will run consistently.

Windows 10 appears to enhance performance on my main system, yet gaming on my Pentium feels slower than 7 in GTA V. The added background tasks in Windows 10 seem to impact performance negatively.

DX12 truly stands out for me. With Windows 10 being available at no cost now, the only real choice seems to be sticking with older drivers.

In terms of pure numbers, 8/8.1 and 10 outperform 7 and Vista by under 5% in benchmarks thanks to reduced overhead. 10 will eventually surpass 8.1 because of DX12 support, which won’t hurt performance now but will significantly boost it later when games start using it.

Windows 8/8.1 offered enhancements beneath the surface that went unnoticed by users, while Windows 10 introduced DX12 and WDDM 2.0—features I found unexpectedly absent. In short, Windows 10 is the more advanced option if you're not interested in upgrading to 10. If you prefer stability, 8.1 remains a solid alternative (support will last longer than 7).
