I’m planning to swap out the motherboards and was wondering about the simplest method to reinstall Windows. Would using a built-in feature work, or would I need a third-party tool? Keeping my data is important to me, so I’d like to preserve it if possible. You’re right—it might sound odd, but I remember from my last board change that I still had the OS on a CD and could boot from it.

Do you run Windows 10? Earlier versions required a full reinstall, but with Windows 10 I didn’t experience any issues on a fresh setup.

Switched to a different motherboard and booted up normally. Previously, I did this without reinstalling Windows. For OEM systems, a new key might be required.

Yes, you can try it now on Windows 10. It might encounter issues due to updated chipset support and driver changes.

I've seen it happen before—it only installs the necessary drivers, not sure if it deletes older ones. It might be a good idea to clear those from your storage.

Create a bootable USB and you're finished. Avoid the usual advice to just upgrade directly; it might cause issues with your software. I’d only try it on a trial machine. A fresh Windows install is better for me.

Modern Windows versions from Windows 8 onward offer better stability during updates. They can handle system changes smoothly and will refresh all necessary device drivers when used with a fresh motherboard.

Consider the significant shift involved. For instance, I'm changing from z97 + 4690k to X370 + R7 1700. In many reports of BSODs, reduced performance, stuttering, etc., were usually caused by incomplete reinstallation. If this isn't true for you, don't stress. I've updated my hardware twice during this Windows 10 setup and never faced problems—except for a minor Bluetooth issue, which is rare for a motherboard.
