The top choice would depend on your needs, but many recommend services that offer strong security and good speeds across the United States.

Consider what you mean by 'best'. If you're looking for the safest option, choose services outside the US and participating in international intelligence networks like the 5,9,14 eyes alliance. Examples include NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark.

We focus on the tools that help you stay secure and connected. Do you truly require a VPN?

If you don’t have a clear need for a VPN, avoid using it. Depending on your perspective, it might even reduce your security. I always suggest ProtonVPN. They operate without profit motives and are based in Switzerland, which means robust privacy regulations. They’ve undergone audits. There’s a free version without data limits, plus several paid options for faster connections and better servers. Since they’re not profit-driven, they don’t share your information. Along with PIA, these are the VPN services I recommend most.

I frequently download files, so I don’t mind being tracked. My main concern is mainly the downloading process and I’m getting bored of seeing ads from stores I visit. I know VPNs are meant to protect privacy, but why would they be less secure?

To prevent your ISP from monitoring your downloads, you have options. If this applies to your phone and you disable location services, ads will still appear. Most platforms rely on location data for targeting, which is more precise than IP addresses. Security-wise, many sites can detect VPN usage, making tracking easier. If privacy isn't a concern, you're safe. For those prioritizing safety, consider alternative methods instead.

Thanks for the details. I chose SurfShark because it supports unlimited device connections and offers better pricing.

For advertisements, you'll still see ads. If your browser uses cookies, they'll continue to use that data to show ads related to your information. Location-based ads will display content from the VPN server you connect to, such as Germany, so you'll see German ads. A VPN doesn't stop ads from appearing; it only hides your identity. If you want to avoid ads, consider using a free ad blocker.

I've mostly relied on Express/Nord and now use Ivacy. All three work well, but Ivacy performs significantly better than the others. With a 50MB connection and other VPNs, I noticed drops to 25-35MB, whereas Ivacy only cut it by up to 5MB. At $1.16 per month, it's quite fast and secure.
