I didn't buy them together. I secured a solid deal on an i5 priced at $120, and the z170 dropped from $200 to $150 a few months later. It was just a chain of happenings that matched my budget needs, and I intend to purchase 6700k whenever my finances permit and I have a board prepared. I recently acquired an MSI b150 PC at a wholesaler for $50, so I’ll also have a home for the i5 when I get the 6700k.

No, it doesn't rely on the chipset, provided you upgrade to Kaby Lake BIOS power phases; the design remains the key factor.

The 7700k seems like a natural option, and I'm confident my h115i will handle it smoothly at 5ghz.

If you're planning to use that board (it should work), make sure to update the BIOS prior to installing the new CPU. I don't see any reason you can't reach 5.0GHz on that board—it's a solid one.
