I purchased an i5-6400 for roughly $120 USD at microcenter six months ago, paired it with my Z170x-Gaming7 motherboard. I managed to achieve a BCLK overclock up to 4.8ghz. Under stress testing for 12 hours, temperatures reached about 70°C, but stayed around 35°C during gaming. What are your thoughts on this?

Overclocking an i5 6400 voids the warranty, works only through BCLK OC, and usually doesn't pay off much, though it might help with a high-end motherboard and mid-range CPU.

Overclocking an i5 6400 voids the warranty, works only through BCLK OCing, and isn't usually worth it. A good overclock is rare, but it can help with a high-end motherboard and mid-range CPU. The i5 6th gen runs at 6400 to 6600k, with speeds unlocked in k. I got top performance by buying a cheaper board for $50 more than a B board, saving hundreds. Warranty is worthless unless it really costs me money.

The distinction lies in chip binning and ASIC value.

The BIOS hack from motherboard makers really exists. It changes the BCLK signal so it only affects the CPU and memory, while everything else stays at 100. That BIOS is still simple to get and functions properly. All temperatures remain near 25 degrees during idle, and the CPU is the only component above 30, except for my GPU.

Yes, the chip is unlikely to support such an OC due to its lower ASIC rating compared to a k series or 6600 i5, and it might eventually cause failure.

It has been performing very well over the past few months. Around December, I'm setting up a Ryzen 5 system with quicker RAM to avoid any issues if something happens. I think it could last five years in this setup.

Another reason might be that choosing a 6400 with a high-end Z170 board and cooler would have been more cost-effective, but this decision has also canceled the warranty for the motherboard and CPU, leaving you with a risky setup.
