I own this netbook which includes Windows 7 starter and standard browser apps. I’m looking for a lightweight operating system to improve performance, mainly for browsing Chrome and accessing the web.

I'm using Raining Pixel. Xubuntu is a minimal Linux distribution. You can also get Ubuntu's software center to download Chrome easily.

An alternative concept is to try Chrome OS, which might function; worth testing. If that fails, consider using Xubuntu as suggested by other users, or opt for a fresh installation of Windows 7 Starter.

I’m sure Xubuntu is the best choice.

No new builds since April and no milestone build... I'm skeptical that this is any good. have you tried it? I really want to give ChromeOS a go...

I've tested it on two Acer laptops—one from around 2007/2008 and another I got in late 2012—but neither worked with wireless. It was disappointing since my main use is in a browser. I do have a Chromebook, which is great, but it feels too expensive for its price. I’d really like to see ChromeOS available on it if it’s affordable, or at least not force exclusivity.

I rely on a previous release of Ubuntu on outdated laptops. Perfect for simple tasks, and it’s hard to tell it’s running a Celeron with just 2GB of RAM.

I have a system with an Atom n280 single-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, running Windows 8.1 32-bit, and it performs significantly better than on a 7. For Linux, I suggest using Linux Mint XFCE—it's very user-friendly.
