I own a Windows 7 laptop and am looking to replace it with a lighter alternative. It needs a fast system that occasionally freezes on the browser, a good lightweight browser supporting multiple tabs and bookmarks, an HTML/CSS/JS editor, and an HD media player for MKV, MP4, AVI files. Windows 8.1, if you don’t like the current interface, try the classic shell from classicshell.net—it’s free.

Linux? If your PC can't run Windows 7, then it seems like a pretty limited machine for anything else, honestly.

I use Linux Mint on my laptop and really enjoy it. It performs better than Windows 7 and offers a comparable interface. It supports Chrome, Firefox, VLC, and many text editors—most are available across various Linux distributions.

Xubuntu 64bit or 32bit is a Linux distro. It supports web browsing with Google Chrome and offers many programming tools. I used it while studying C#.

Consider Ubuntu, Mint, or Windows 8 (version 1.0). You might also explore Android or ChromeOS if you were feeling adventurous.
