Best motherboards for the I7-9900K processor
You're considering the 9700K and comparing it to the Maximus XI line, but some users mention issues like lower VRAM compared to the Aorus Z390 series. Since you plan to use the PC for heavy gaming and engineering tasks, you'll want a board with sufficient memory and performance. The Aorus Z390 generally offers more VRAM, which is important for multitasking and demanding applications. If you need a balance between gaming performance and stability, the Aorus Z390 might be the better choice. However, if you're prioritizing gaming and have a budget for higher VRAM, the Maximus XI could work well. Consider your specific needs and test options before deciding.
I would also vote for the Gigabyte Aorus series. My 9900K has been in an Asus Maximus X Hero, an MSI MEG Godlike and the Aorus Extreme. Personally I like the Asus Bios, simpler for OCing but less capable overall. The MSI board was good but had some performance issues due to not holding the BCLK stable. Then the Gigabyte board it has been amazing. Took some time to learn the bios but has let me OC the 9900K further than any of the others.
If you prefer avoiding the gigabyte BIOS, the Taichi is the next option, though it runs about 15°C hotter than the Aorus Master when powered on, and the VRM reaches roughly 75°C during 90-100% load at 185W.
Aorus Master, Ultra, Pro, Elite, AsRock Extreme4, ASUS Maximus XI Apex, Extreme, MSI Godlike, EVGA Dark – all power options available, 12+ performance level.
The ASUS board works fine, but they’re missing too many boards for the price. I’m planning to look into the BIOS software on the XI since I’ve heard great things about it. The Aorus software matches the Max X well. This model fits Elite and higher boards. My son got the Ultra with an i9 9900k, and I’m really impressed—so I’d trade in my i7 8700k with the HeroX if I could.
