It's unclear why these topics haven't been discussed, but perhaps I enjoy the old-school stuff. Return to Castle Wolfenstein and RTCW ET (Enemy Territory) are free since the single-player mode was dropped, so developers just moved the multiplayer features out.

Diablo 2, StarCraft 1 or 2, or perhaps a LAN version—though I think a local setup adds more excitement. Warcraft III, Age of Empires 2 or 3, but I’d go with the 2 in LAN for more players. Everyone else has great suggestions too.

Goddamn, I mess up this all the time. I was thinking about CoD 2, and CoD 3 is actually a great one too, though you'd need consoles for it. Another title worth checking out is Borderlands 2.

TF2 actually supports LAN connectivity. Regarding the DayZ question, it's a standalone game, not a mod.
