For a budget build, I considered getting an APU to save on graphics card costs. I did, but the CPU is 28nm and I’m aiming for 12nm. I also need a cooler, though that’s optional. Some compromises are necessary, I understand.
well, there's a bit more to it than that. What you want is Ryzen for sure, if this is a gaming PC. buying used would be a concern for that, but buying new, every CPU will have an included cooler. A Ryzen 3 2200G would be the minimum, with a Ryzen 5 3400G being the most powerful APU you could get. The A8 CPU is going to be slow, it's quite outdated, not using Zen, and the $180 price tag is too steep for that chip. There are some odd choices there. I could save money on the case, the Wi-Fi card seems overkill, an Ax200-based chip should cost around $30-40 and perform better. I’d pick a bigger SSD instead. With this budget, I’d go for a separate CPU and GPU—easily possible in an $800 build—and it would be significantly faster.
Consider a budget-friendly CPU with strong performance. It should be more affordable and efficient, offering better value for your money. For that price range, skimping on the case might actually boost your overall setup. What are your main needs? Are you planning to use this build for gaming, content creation, or everyday tasks?
It seems I hesitated about Intel mainly due to their upgrade options. What do you think about a 3400G?
You're not familiar with future components, but am4 appears to be the latest, while lga 1200 should work with Rocket Lake. Intel seems a bit stronger now, though it still depends on the specific board you choose. You can't run Zen 2 or Zen 3 on that A320 board. I'd opt for a 10100 over a 3400G as it's faster and cheaper. For extra savings, you can get a GPU if you need more processing power.
