Best CPU for x265 encoding?
Hello everyone! ^^ I’m looking for the top CPU choice for H.265 encoding, especially with Handbrake or other tools that perform better. On my main machine I have a Ryzen 9 3900X, and on another I’m using an Intel Core i7-10700K. Also, I want to know the optimal settings for H.264 and H.265 encoding in Handbrake. Thanks!♥
This depends a lot on the settings and resolution, but a 5950x should work well. The 3900x offers the highest quality among the two options you have. For quicker encoding, try using nvenc—it can be faster with slightly lower quality. If you have two systems, testing both might give you the best result.
You can adjust the bitrate to affect file size. I recommend running your own test, but the 3900x should perform better.
CPU-driven encoders struggle with many cores. Generally, x265 performs best with six cores or more, but efficiency drops after that. For single-video encoding, consider an 8-core processor. If you plan to combine gaming and encoding, opt for a 12-core CPU. To handle several videos at once, choose a high-core-count processor and encode them in parallel. HandBrake’s video quality varies by source: for high-quality output, use CRF 17 at 720p, CRF 18 at 1080p, and CRF 20 for 4K. For medium quality, increase CRF by 4 or 5. Slower encoding presets boost speed, but lower bitrates or higher CRF will slow you down. NVENC works well but lacks advanced features like 2-pass encoding and CRF encoding. Apologies for the unclear English.
libx265 supports scaling effectively across up to 32 cores. See the article for details: https://singhkays.com/blog/x265-128-core...-azure-vm/
