Best budget-friendly AM5 mini PCs for an overclocked 8700G APU
Seeking a solid VRM capable of handling 8700G continuously, even with heavy overclocking. This implies robust power delivery—ideally supporting at least 8+2 phases at 50A per phase for the APU.
Two UDIMM connectors with quality PCB design for high-end memory tuning are ideal. The main PCIe16 port should support Gen4, and if possible, a M.2 slot would save costs.
At least two display outputs are needed, preferably three. Running memory at 8400MHz is recommended, though 8800MHz is preferred.
A minimum of 12 phases at 80A would be beneficial if the board is intended for heavy overclocking with the CPU and GPU.
The main PCIe slot and M.2 should support PCIe5, especially if paired with a GPU like the 9950X.
If the board is uATX-sized, the second PCIe4x4 slot would be ideal. A good match for both APU and GPU would be a model with 16-core support and a dedicated GPU.
A VRM that fits snugly and allows maximum performance is essential. If the board is in a smaller form factor, it might be worth seeking a more affordable option.
For a uATX build, I’m open to finding a solid APU with similar needs and the memory. If possible, a 19-phase VRM would be great but I’m not sure about PCIe4x16.
On the other side, mini-ITX or uATX options are more affordable, though they come with higher costs.
Cheaper alternatives in China exist for Night Devil boards, but even those prices can be reasonable if BIOS updates are manageable.
The ASRock B650M "NIght Devil" series is a solid pick, though Chinese suppliers may offer better value.
I’m also curious about MSI’s upcoming B850M MPOWER board—it could support extreme overclocks and would be perfect for both CPU/GPU and memory.
If achievable, it would be worth considering the premium for reliability and flexibility.
What else should I consider? Also, I’m wondering if MSI is the only one targeting this niche, or are other manufacturers entering this space?
Confirm this board isn’t overly challenging for achieving high speeds with an APU. The 8400 model didn’t pose too much difficulty on my setup, especially since my APU has a poor memory controller. B850M Force from Gigabyte is the spec I’m focusing on. While it’s a bit barebones compared to MPOWER, it could be worth looking into if you find a good deal. To be honest, MSI hasn’t been reliable in the Western market, so if you’re sourcing in Europe it might be the only viable choice—though availability there is still limited.
No knowledge of pricing in your area or your exact budget, yet some solid mATX options to look into: ASRock B850M Riptide WiFi AMD AM5 microATX, ASRock B850M Steel Legend WiFi AMD AM5 microATX, Gigabyte B850M AORUS Elite WiFi6E Ice AMD AM5 microATX. All fall within the $150-$190 range as I understand. I’m using an 8700G and running it with a full-size ATX, so I can’t really suggest you build it that way.
Those 10,000+ MHz memory OC claims on early B850M MPOWER previews are more of a validation showcase than something you’ll ever run 24/7. In practice, if a board can handle 8400–8800 stable with a 8700G, that’s already excellent. For APUs, VRM quality matters but not as much as with a 9950X. Even an 8+2 or 10+2 phase @ 50–60A is plenty for a 65W/120W APU under OC. What really helps is decent heatsinks so the VRM doesn’t throttle under long loads. Mini-ITX boards in AM5 are almost all overpriced, agreed. If you can live with uATX, the ASUS Prime B850M-K and ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 are safe budget bets, they won’t clock RAM to the moon, but solid for daily use. The Chinese Night Devil boards are interesting on paper 19 phases looks huge, but BIOS support and long-term updates are where they usually fall apart. Not ideal if stability is critical. If the B850M MPOWER lands at a reasonable price, it could indeed be the sweet spot: stronger memory trace layout + beefier VRM without going full flagship. MSI has a history of making MPOWER/OC boards good value for tinkering. Bottom line: if you want cheap & reliable → ASRock/ASUS budget B-series. If you want to play with memory OC and squeeze every MHz out of 8700G → waiting for the MSI MPOWER makes sense, but don’t expect 10 GHz RAM stable 24/7.
