I haven't encountered any issues with Security Essentials on Windows 7, and it functions smoothly with mbam fine.

On Windows 7 you use Security Essentials plus Malwarebytes. For Windows 8 it's just Malwarebytes. I always perform scans myself.

Bitdefender Free AV is the one I prefer these days and it runs smoothly without taking much space on your system.
