You can disable it through the settings while keeping essential alerts.

It looks like your system is running a bit heavy after the scan. That’s normal, but if it feels slow, consider restarting or checking for updates.

I rely on Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. The latter performs better.

The scans are quite demanding on my system, mainly affecting the CPU and HDD.

It might have been a while since the last update, but there was an issue where it kept appearing. It still sends alerts if a threat is found, though it doesn’t push it to the top when everything is heavily covered (which tends to mess things up). Also, automated scans and updates aren’t that important anymore. Virus protection in Windows isn’t like armor—it’s more like medicine if you fall ill. I don’t want it sounding like an alarm every time I open a suspicious file. If you’re concerned, just configure it to run in a sandbox; then everything should be okay.

However, it doesn't run continuously and appears to operate slowly consistently.

I don’t run MalwareBlaster continuously. It stays updated and I use it only when necessary. Avast! offers solid real-time defense.

I also tried Avast but it interfered with my modem on my motherboard. I couldn't access the internet until I disabled it. Now I'm using AVG and Malawarebytes without any issues.
