Beginner asking about CPU OC
Beginner asking about CPU OC
Hello!
This is the CPU I'm planning to overclock:
Intel Core i7-6700K - 8 threads / 4,0GHz (4,2 Ghz Turbo) / 8MB / Socket 1151
I don't know which programs to use or what speed is safe, but I thought 4,6 Ghz would be a reasonable choice.
Appreciate your time.
This guide is really helpful.
Keep voltage below 1.4V for better performance.
Prefer making overclocking changes through the BIOS instead of using software.
It also depends on your CPU and cooling options, but I believe a high percentage of i7-6700k with OC up to 4.6Ghz is definitely possible, around half of them.
there are many online guides, but i’ll walk you through it quickly. you need a temperature monitoring tool and a core voltage monitor; some programs handle both. also, a stress test is important to check stability. i recommend occt for that. in the bios, make sure all cores run at the same speed and increase the clock by 0.1ghz. start the stress test for at least 15 minutes. if it passes, try again and increase the clock further until the system boots or the test fails. then go into the bios and raise the voltage by 0.025. keep adjusting the clock and voltage until you reach a stable overclock with controlled temperatures and voltages. for the 6700k, avoid exceeding 85 degrees under heavy load like occt, nor go above 1.35v for regular use. personally, aim for 1.3 volts or lower.
also, you’ll need to manage vdroop and set an offset or adaptive voltage so you don’t run at full power constantly. this was just a brief overview of the main steps—i’ve read a few guides and watched some videos to help.
