Began experiencing occasional stutters recently.
I've noticed some stuttering lately, which is getting bothersome. Usually when something changes, I try to recall what happened before and try to reverse it. At first, I thought Chrome might be the culprit because closing it seemed to help. But now it makes things worse, even though it wasn’t the real cause. The game is FFXIV, and I’m using a main rig with 6700k, 1080Ti, plenty of RAM, lots of SSDs, and 1440p at 144Hz with G-sync. My system runs Windows 10, and frame rates usually stay between 60 and the monitor’s maximum of 144. Sometimes I see brief micro-stutters, with FPS around 50-60, but it feels abrupt rather than steady. It seems to happen more when I explore new areas. There’s no obvious pattern, but it might be related to the disk. When I check monitoring, there’s no significant activity on either the OS SSD or the game’s installation drive. Other drives appear idle. The CPU usage is the only thing that changes—while playing, it stays around 3-4%, but spikes to about 6% during glitches. The GPU usage drops during those moments, and it’s not overheating or showing any issues. I’m considering moving the GPU to another machine with more CPU power to test, but I’m still trying to figure out what’s causing this.
FFXIV receives regular updates like many other online titles. Right now, I’m not focused on any other PC games, but I noticed GTAV also doesn’t appeal to me. I was planning to try it on different platforms just to see how it performs. If it works well there, I assume the issue is specific to this system.
By checking this, you can identify whether the issue is with the game or something else. This will prevent a lot of frustration if it turns out to be the game instead of your system.
I need to submit my PC troubleshooting details and step away for a while. The issue wasn’t serious, but the solution was quite simple. I’m sorry to admit it… I just restarted the device! Reboooooot! Usually I only reboot my system for the monthly Windows updates near patch Tuesday. This hasn’t happened before, so I didn’t suspect anything.
System issues persist even after reboot. Works smoothly without Chrome but fails when it does. Often disrupts while using a second monitor for YouTube during games. Likely needs to stick with the original plan. Next task: upgrade from 1080Ti to 8086k.
