Beer spill
Beer spill
I accidentally dropped a tiny bit of lager onto the back of my PC. It looks like even less (about the size of a pinky finger) has fallen into the vertically mounted PSU. Will this affect performance or cause any problems if I don’t clean it up soon? As someone new to power supply maintenance, I’m worried about potential issues.
Electrical current combined with water leads to gradual deterioration. This process results in corrosion, which is undesirable. To stop it, you should disconnect your power supply from the outlet for a period until it fully dries. Liquid beer might not help, but water could cause harm.
If the amount is minimal and you're unfamiliar with electronics, I'd prefer to assume it didn't cause any harm. Instead of risking damage by disassembling it, clean it gently, and reassemble it safely. Let it remain unplugged and dry for a week.
I would simply unplug it and place it in a well-ventilated area for several hours. If you can manage without it for a day or two, it’s safer. I understand internal parts differ from keyboards, but the steps should remain similar. I live in Arizona where it’s very dry, so depending on your location you might need to let it rest longer. Be careful handling the power supply if you’re unsure—people often try to salvage components from appliances without proper knowledge. This tends to be the biggest risk for hobbyists. I’d probably spend a few dollars each month to replace it eventually if needed. Thanks for clarifying your setup.
based on what i've seen, a fully submerged pc needs roughly a week to dry. since only a little water came out, i'd estimate 2-3 days minimum—this also relies on temperature, humidity, and ventilation. just keep in mind it's risky after a few hours, and putting components upside down helps prevent water from sitting around. if it's cold or winter inside, drying time will be much longer. generally, good airflow is key; aim for about a week as a safe guideline. many factors influence the process.
It wasn't connected or powered on then, so I hope everything will be fine
