In the coming week or so, after the components arrive, I’ll start assembling a new PC. All decisions about the parts are settled, but now it’s time for the toughest choice—what operating system to install? As a student, I might choose Windows 8.1 Pro for about $70 AUD, then switch to Windows 10 Pro at the same cost (or possibly free if rumors hold). Alternatives include using Windows 10 technical preview and installing it once it’s released, trying Steam OS until then, or experimenting with Windows 8.1 if I want to stick with it. If you have any other ideas, feel free to share. I prefer Windows 8.1 and won’t revert to version 7. I can understand why some people dislike it, and I’ll keep my laptop running for university and work until Windows 10 is available. Things to think about are the SSD and HDD you have; I’d likely put the OS on the SSD, but if I install Windows 10 later it might be better to store the temporary version on the HDD.

I would install Windows 8 and store it on the SSD. It should work without issues.

I don't suggest setting up the preview yet; steamos remains in beta (perhaps alpha). Windows 8.1 is the optimal choice. Considering future upgrades, it's still wiser to install Windows on an SSD with necessary files on the HDD. Getting back to applications is straightforward, though a few new games will be missing.

I had no idea you could find windows at a low cost as a student in Australia. Would it be possible for me to get one like that since I’m also a student here?

I haven't examined it closely yet. It looks like the product I'm thinking of is likely.

Consider installing Windows 95 if your needs align with its features and compatibility.

Just a note, in case you weren't aware: Windows 10 is essentially the Technical Preview version and actually contains a keylogger. It’s not advisable to rely on it as your main operating system. Also, check a tech site where someone spent nine hours installing it!

It would be better than installing Vista since I already have some disks that came with an XP computer, but I didn’t upgrade because of the negative reviews.
