The first time I wasn't using Safe Mode, I managed to start normally without any issues, but later I turned it off to investigate. When I rebooted again, a short 30-second Automatic Repairs screen appeared on the black startup screen. After switching back on, I was in RE and had to choose Vol 3 to restart, which worked without further problems.

Following a successful startup into safe mode, you should be able to transition back to regular operation.
