I wouldn't compare Origin with Uplay in the same way, and I believe it faces a lot of criticism for not earning its share. Origin actually offers some solid features that indicate EA is genuinely trying to match Steam, whereas Uplay feels imposed with minimal value for the player. Before Valve, Origin had a refund policy and possibly encouraged them to create their own service; it also includes On The House, EA Access, and Game Time. Steam sometimes gives away games more frequently—like Limbo—and does so less often than Origin. Consistency is another factor. Origin generally runs more smoothly, and I haven’t encountered issues where it caused me trouble. Uplay is well-known for those problems, and I think that’s more damaging than any feature it might miss. Additionally, why isn’t anyone pointing out similar concerns about Battle.net? The B.net client provides only basic updates and a chat feature, which is far less than what Origin delivers. It seems Blizzard is often exempt from this scrutiny.
It seems Battle.net came out before Steam by roughly ten years, and the client was introduced recently to fully replace older launchers. Blizzard also didn’t distribute its titles on Steam initially, later discontinuing the service, while EA opted for Uplay DRM.
