My girlfriend's Lenovo L540 with a Core i3-4000M seems to run at only 0.80GHz when the battery is removed from the laptop, even if I have something running in the background like Twitch or YouTube. As soon as I put the battery back in, the CPU is running at 2.4GHz. The power plan is always set to maximum performance so I'm not quite sure why it's throttling like that. It's definitely not overheating since the fan isn't spinning and I have it set to "active cooling"

Never take out a battery while it's still running, that's not proper.

Restarting the laptop using only the wall charger has no impact.

Nope no difference. The fan spins regardless of whether the battery is installed or not.

Are you experiencing the same shutdown behavior? Check your BIOS settings for temperature readings. Have you performed a CPU stress test to trigger a restart?

Prime95 execution shows moderate CPU activity at 33%, CPU remains locked at 0.8GHz. When battery is connected, utilization jumps to 100% with a higher lock speed of 2.38GHz. Expect increased thermal output.

33%? Are the cores being restricted? I’m curious if a different charger is required. Maybe in some way the charger can’t supply as many amps as the battery needs when the system is working hard?

I’m not sure because I can handle Prime95 and charge the battery from zero without any issues. All four threads are listed in Task Manager. It might just be a Windows corruption problem.

Consider installing Windows on another drive and retesting. Check if the performance improves. A BIOS update might also resolve the problem.

Wait. I'm trying to understand this. Why would you be taking the battery out while using it? Or am I misunderstanding and the device is functioning normally before the CMOS battery was removed?... Or is it the laptop battery?
