Basic OS without internet, assistance required
Hey, Linux newbie here, looking for help right now. So I just got a new PC setup: Ryzen 9 5900X, B550 Aorus Elite board, GTX970 (planned to swap for 3080), and I'm running a Hackintosh build. I can't get past W10 but am using it temporarily. I installed Elementary OS, but it didn't recognize my Ethernet so it didn’t fetch much stuff. I downloaded Realtek drivers on USB, but the 'make' command wasn’t working because 'build essentials' wasn’t installed without internet. I found some offline installation guides using Keryx as a mobile app on USB, but they require a 'wxversion module' which isn’t available right now. Any tips or advice would be super helpful!
You don't have to perform any steps. Simply obtain the .deb files for the necessary packages. Confirm they match the Ubuntu version your Elementary OS uses—likely 20.04 or 18.04. Visit Repology and search for the desired package; this will let you download the .dep files. You can then transfer them to a USB drive and double-click them in Elementary, which should install them like a Windows setup. If gdebi isn't available, install it via terminal with sudo dpkg -i /path/to/package.deb. Be sure your network adapter isn't being flagged as an issue, possibly needing net_tools for proper detection. You may also need to check if ifconfig is accessible. For additional guidance, refer to the 20.04 build-essential page at https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/amd64/...l/download or similar sources on packages.ubuntu.org.
I’d suggest thinking about alternatives beyond Elementary. It’s a meme suggesting Elementary resembles MacOS, but you can enhance Plasma to feel even closer to MacOS with a unified menu and dock layout. For instance, observe the global menu at the top left in Plasma on Arch Linux or the dock at the bottom. While my icon theme isn’t very MacOS-like, switching it up makes it look more aligned. Personally, Elementary tends to be quite frustrating. It lacks built-in support for PPAs and mostly relies on appearance. Still, if you’re committed to using Elementary, I’m here to assist.
