Back to the way things were once.
I purchased a Vive. The main cause of all problems in the world, correct? Initially, I had an EVGA 1060 with 6GB RAM, an Fx 8350, a 1TB HDD, and a 150GB SSD but no SSD drive. At first, everything seemed fine, but when I started Superhot VR, the performance was smooth until about two days ago. The frame rate dropped sharply and resolution fell afterward. Someone suggested replacing the HDD with an SSD because it was trying to switch to the CPU. I’m not very familiar with these details or that advice, so any guidance on fixing this would be really helpful. (I’m considering upgrading to a B360 motherboard, an i5 8400, and 8GB DDR4 RAM.)
FX could be the slow part, consider an i5 8600 with 8GB RAM and a 240GB SSD would help.
The FX 8350 processor is the main issue. It consumes a lot of power and has an unusual way of processing data. Be careful with those eight cores and threads. The advice from @wojtepanik is excellent—consider a 6-core option that can be overclocked, plus an SSD will make a big difference.
Recently many new builders experience the same issue regardless of their hardware. They report it runs smoothly until a few days or hours later. It seems linked to Windows 10 updates in the background. If you were stable before, FPS shouldn't drop unless something changes. Make sure your updates are current and install them before proceeding. As I often advise, stick to Windows 7—it might lose DX12, but most popular games don’t rely on it or have vulnerabilities. Recent Windows 10 releases are known for being bloated.
