I need to replace my motherboard since the new GPUs are too large. The upcoming 3+ slots will clash with the front panel connectors and other components on my MATX board. I’ll have to swap it out. I’m searching for a standard ATX B550 motherboard under $150. The X570 works but costs more and isn’t essential. It should offer solid memory architecture and VRM support for overclocking, plus USB 2.0 ports (they have lower latency than 3.0, which is good for peripherals). I’m unsure which models to check but considering ASUS or Gigabyte, possibly ASRock. I’ve heard ASUS B550 boards have poor memory layout, so I’m leaning toward Gigabyte or ASRock. My current board is an older Gigabyte B450 DS3H.
This model is similar to the ASRock B550 Steeler, but slightly different in appearance and color options. The B550 Extreme4 is only marginally more expensive and offers a better fit for your budget. Both share the same core specifications, so it depends on your personal preference.
Be sure to review the manual carefully, as some IO shield ports may actually come from a USB hub chip. For instance, the Aorus Pro V2 includes two USB hub chips, which can boost performance but may introduce slight delays. The 5600X draws between 60-80 watts, so a standard VRM should suffice. Keep this in mind if you decide to upgrade to a 5900 or 5950. The Asrock B550 Steel Legend offers a balanced USB setup, while the Gigabyte B550 Gaming X has poor IO shield performance and outdated audio. The Aorus Elite V2 provides solid VRM and good slot layout, though the second PCIe x16 only supports two lanes. You can supplement it with a separate bracket for more USB 2.0 ports if needed.

The 5900X runs smoothly on its own. Improving performance comes from turning on PBO +200 and increasing the limits. The VRM on modem boards doesn’t seem to be a big issue here. It looks like you won’t be pushing the core clocks too hard, so I might revert to the 5900X and test the PA120 cooling. It should perform better than the FC140.
