I recently purchased a used ASUS Prime B450M-A motherboard for my R5 3600X setup. I assumed it would work without problems until I discovered the previous owner used an R5 1600. If there’s a compatibility issue when it arrives, what’s the most affordable way to update the BIOS?
Updating the BIOS is a free process. It seems you shouldn’t face any issues because it’s designed to handle 3600. The chip inside might be outdated, but that doesn’t necessarily mean problems. If an update is required, visit the manufacturer’s site for your board and follow their guidelines. Obtain the correct BIOS file for your exact model and its revision/version, as using the wrong one could cause issues. Stick strictly to their instructions for flashing it, and you should proceed without trouble.
Inquire about the board's age and whether they've refreshed the documentation. It would be ideal if you're successful. If it doesn't even start, you'll likely need to purchase or borrow the cheapest AM4 CPU available.
UEFI BIOS settings apply to all boards compatible with these two processors, which is separate. @Tetras correctly pointed it out earlier.
worst case situation if the board won’t flash BIOS from a USB stick without power, you can visit a repair shop to have them update the BIOS. If you prefer doing it yourself, you can flash the BIOS using jumper wires and a CH341A via the SPI header. For an ASUS Prime board, it’s near the CMOS battery holder; for an MSI Pro board, it’s beneath the cooler mounting bracket or close to the NVMe SSD area. This approach is more complicated than needed unless nearby stores charge excessively, in which case it’s probably not worth the effort.
UEFI represents a more recent firmware version compared to the older legacy BIOS, yet updates are still necessary for new CPUs to be properly recognized and, in certain situations, to initiate a boot. Previously, AMD provided a "boot kit" consisting of an older CPU and a heatsink, though it's unclear if they offer this service now.

I’ve observed two points: the BIOS revision for the Ryzen 5 1600 appears lower compared to the Ryzen 5 3600/3600x, which makes it doubtful my CPU will be supported unless my calculations are incorrect. Additionally, the boot kit could be beneficial if AliExpress is a valid option, since otherwise I’ll need to retrieve my old Ryzen 5 3600 purchase from over three years ago.
