Hey there! I recently acquired the rental modem/router combo #2 from my ISP (RCN). Although it performs better than the previous one, it tends to slow down significantly—reaching around 800 Mbps on my desktop during the technician’s visit, then dropping to just 30 Mbps. Because of this, I’m ending the rental agreement.

My needs have changed: I need to run a MOCA for hardwiring my desktop, so I want to confirm everything can be configured properly. Right now I own two MOCAs—one on the modem and another on my desktop. Here are the links:
- Modem: https://www.amazon.com/Actiontec-Bonded-...B013J7O3X0
- Desktop MOCA: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I5TJGSE?tag...th=1&psc=1

The modem I’m considering is listed as more reliable than the #2 model on RCN’s recommendations. (Reference list: https://freedom251.com/rcn-modems/)

For routers, my roommates only use WiFi and live upstairs, so I’ll need a solid router without spending over $300. I’ve found a couple that might fit:
- Dual-band AIProtection compatible RT-AC86U: https://www.amazon.com/Dual-band-Dual-co...B0752FD3XJ
- Nighthawk R9000 router on sale for $250: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk...B01M12RE4A

I’m still unsure if these will integrate smoothly. I’d like to ask my ISP a few questions—like whether certain devices only work with specific modems or if there are compatibility quirks. I’m open to paying a bit more for something that lasts, so I want peace of mind and long-term reliability.

Thanks!
Edit: Updated plan—please let me know if anything comes up. I don’t want tech hiccups or unreliable service.

I don’t have any background with the ASUS one, but a relative owns a Netgear Nighthawk that performs extremely well throughout the home.

Sure, I can help with that. Could you share the details of the modem you're looking at?

No confirmation available otherwise than contacting Netgear support; they will handle it.

Choose the first option, an AC router with WiFi 5. Alternatively, opt for an AX router with WiFi 6. The Netgear isn't compatible with AX technology and is using outdated AD features, making it a useless investment.

Consider skipping the Netgear router or is the Netgear modem acceptable? Or would it be better to steer clear of Netgear altogether?

That specific router works well, Netgear is okay otherwise.

This link points to a product on Amazon that seems useful for an AX router.
