What people hear and what might occur are separate ideas. Everyone who has experienced consequences likely shared the same view. As I mentioned, your actions are yours alone; nothing is open to discussion. You'll follow your own path, and the law will carry out its role.

Have you heard of any instances where someone was arrested for downloading items without permission? (I won’t focus on extremely serious offenses like child pornography) The only case I’m familiar with is a former individual who copied VHS and DVDs and sold them at a garage sale.

It varies by game and publisher. For some, buying the CD key matters less than having a valid license. If the publisher views the software files as purchased property, they may pursue legal steps. This falls under copyright issues between you and the rights holder. In the US, it's typically a civil matter—companies can issue demands or cease-and-desist notices, but jail time is unlikely. Most cases involve sending formal warnings and asking for payment to avoid court. I wouldn't attempt this, not just because of the risk of being caught, but because it seems highly improbable to succeed.

In fact, I know someone from my early days. During the crackdown on Kazza—whether it was called Kazzaw or something else—these record companies stepped in. He racked up enough piracy charges that went beyond what would be considered a serious crime.
