The claim about Windows 10 being offered as a free upgrade for Windows 8.1 and 7 users is no longer accurate. Microsoft discontinued support for those older versions, so such upgrades are no longer available.

The free upgrade remains valid for one year starting from the release of Windows 10. (It will stay active indefinitely)

For users operating Windows 8, the process remains consistent with other versions.

That's the issue I was expecting, right? I'm running OEM 7.

Windows 10 offers a free upgrade for anyone using Windows 7 or 8.1 (except Enterprise). Since Windows 8.1 is also a free upgrade for Windows 8 users, it qualifies for the same offer. In the worst case, you might upgrade from 8 to 8.1 and then to Windows 10, but Microsoft likely won’t push this route.
